Untreated sexually transmitted infections (STIs) can affect both current and future fertility, as well as pregnancy outcomes. Learning that you may have an infection can bring uncertainty, but early testing and appropriate medical care offer clarity and a sense of control.

Elevier Women’s Center offers a professional environment where you can access no-cost STI testing, pregnancy testing, and limited ultrasounds. Our team helps you understand your reproductive health and provides clear medical information so you can make informed decisions. You don’t have to navigate these concerns alone.

STIs and Fertility

Certain untreated STIs, particularly chlamydia and gonorrhea, are among the leading causes of preventable infertility. If left untreated, these infections can spread from the cervix to the upper reproductive system, causing Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)

PID can cause inflammation and scarring of the fallopian tubes, making it harder for an egg to travel to the uterus. This can reduce the chance of conception and increase the risk of ectopic pregnancy.

Because many STIs cause few or no symptoms, infections may go unnoticed for long periods. Regular testing is essential, as early detection allows treatment before lasting damage occurs, helping protect long-term fertility.

Risks During Pregnancy

Untreated STIs can also affect pregnancy. Some infections are associated with preterm labor, premature rupture of membranes, or low birth weight. Others may be passed to a baby during pregnancy or delivery, potentially leading to eye infections, pneumonia, neurological complications, or developmental concerns.

Certain viral infections, such as HIV or untreated syphilis, can carry serious risks for both parent and baby without proper medical care. Screening and treatment early in pregnancy help reduce these risks and support healthier outcomes for both. We can offer a risk assessment to see if screening is necessary.

The Importance of Early Testing

Many bacterial STIs, including chlamydia and gonorrhea, are highly treatable with antibiotics when detected early. Testing is simple, private, and empowering; it replaces uncertainty with clear answers, allowing you to take proactive steps for your health.

Even if you are not currently pregnant, STI testing supports future fertility, pregnancy planning, and overall reproductive well-being.
