If you’re trying to understand your chances of getting pregnant, counting forward from the first day of your period can only tell you so much. The more important question is when you ovulate.
Ovulation can shift from one month to another, and pregnancy is possible from sex that happens several days before an egg is actually released.
If you’re asking because your period is late or you recently had sex and are concerned about pregnancy, Elevier Women’s Center offers no-cost, lab-quality pregnancy testing. Contact us today to schedule an appointment.
The Days Before Ovulation Count, Too
Ovulation occurs when an ovary releases an egg. That egg can generally be fertilized for about 12 to 24 hours after its release.
Sperm can survive considerably longer, potentially remaining in the reproductive tract for up to about five days.
That means your fertile window includes more than ovulation day itself. If you have sex several days before ovulation, sperm may still be present when the egg is released.
Your chances of conception are generally highest during the days leading up to ovulation and around the day it occurs.
Look for Patterns, Not Just a Calendar Date
You may have heard that ovulation happens on day 14. That is based on a typical 28-day cycle and doesn’t fit everyone.
Several methods can give you a better idea of what your own cycle is doing. You might track changes in cervical mucus, use an ovulation predictor kit, or record your basal body temperature each morning.
Period-tracking apps can also be useful for keeping a record of your cycles. Just remember that an app predicts ovulation based on previous information. It cannot confirm the exact day an egg is released.
If your periods vary considerably from month to month, calendar predictions become even less reliable.
If You’re Trying to Avoid Pregnancy
Knowing your fertile window can help you understand when conception is more likely, but it cannot identify completely risk-free days for sex.
Ovulation can occur earlier or later than expected, including in women whose cycles are usually regular. If avoiding pregnancy is your goal, talk with a healthcare professional about methods rather than relying only on predicted fertile days.
