If symptoms fade, it’s tempting to assume an infection or issue is gone. Or, you think you can’t have an STI/STD because you never had any symptoms.
In either situation, it’s possible to have an ongoing STI/STD, as many are asymptomatic.
Elevier Women’s Center offers no-cost testing so you can know for certain rather than guess. Schedule a no-cost appointment today.
Bacterial STIs Don’t Resolve Without Treatment
Chlamydia and gonorrhea, the two most common bacterial STI/STDs, do not go away on their own.
According to the CDC, untreated gonorrhea can cause pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) and other lasting health problems, even after symptoms disappear. Chlamydia works the same way. The bacteria can remain active, continuing to cause harm, and still be passed to a partner long after any noticeable symptoms have stopped.
Why Testing Still Matters Without Symptoms
Most people with chlamydia show no symptoms at all, and gonorrhea can go unnoticed for a long time, too. The only reliable way to know your status is to get tested, not by how you feel.
What Happens If You Test Positive
If you test positive for either chlamydia or gonorrhea, you’ll typically be prescribed an antibiotic. While these STI/STDs should go away fully with treatment, they can cause lasting damage.
Other STI/STDs may require antiviral medications, monitoring, and lifestyle changes.
You’ll also want to notify your partner or former partners of your test results to ensure they get tested, too. You can be reinfected by the same STI/STD if your partner doesn’t get treatment.
