You took a pregnancy test. Maybe the result was positive. Maybe the lines were faint enough that you’re still not sure. Either way, you want a real answer, and a home test can only tell you so much. Schedule a no-cost appointment at Elevier Women’s Center in Elk River for lab-quality pregnancy testing and an ultrasound if you qualify.
Why a Pregnancy Test Isn’t Enough
A urine pregnancy test detects hCG, a hormone produced after a fertilized egg implants. What it doesn’t tell you is how far along you are, where the pregnancy is located, or whether it’s progressing. An ultrasound answers all three.
When Can an Ultrasound Detect a Pregnancy?
According to the Cleveland Clinic, an ultrasound can detect an embryo as early as six weeks of gestation. Cardiac activity may not be visible until closer to eight weeks. Scanning before six weeks often produces inconclusive results, which means a return visit instead of the answers you came for.
When you arrive, you’ll be asked about your last menstrual period and when you got your test result. That helps determine whether the timing is right for a scan.
What the Ultrasound Confirms
A limited obstetric ultrasound establishes three key things:
- How far along in the pregnancy you are
- If the pregnancy is viable and growing
- Whether the pregnancy is located inside the uterus
That last point matters for your immediate health and safety. A pregnancy implanted outside the uterus, most often in a fallopian tube, is an ectopic pregnancy. It requires urgent medical care and cannot be identified by a pregnancy test, urine, or blood.
